When going on a Scouting related activity, health information is required. PDF was created using for fields, so it's a little easier to fill out. Too bad every year seems to come up with format changes making it difficult to reuse for future outings.

Morning devotional.

Blessed art thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments.

what is the white horse prophecy?

Constitution Hang by a Thread | LDS Resources, Websites, Links, Articles, and Reviews

Also known as the White Horse Prophecy, I believe.

It's nice to know that there are many, not just Mormons, who are concerned with the welfare of our country. There are many who realize the hand of the Lord in the founding of our blessed nation. I believe the Lord preserved these the United States for the purpose of restoring the fullness of the gospel and blessing the lives of people in all nations. That certainly doesn't make the inhabitants of our country any more special in God's eyes, but it does hold us more accountable for the blessings we enjoy.

May we all do what we can to preserve our nation. The first and most important thing is knowing God's commandments and following them. Our collective disobedience will prevent Heavenly Father from blessing us with the protections we need. Two important ones that come to mind is 1) "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind" and 2) "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself". Those would go a long way to opening the windows of heaven, allowing God to pour His blessings upon us.

It seems these songs are almost impossible to find for MP3 purchase. Some of the prices for LPs seem more reasonable than others. If I do buy some of these, I'll make a trip over to my dad's to borrow his LP player!

LDS Resources for Spiritual Gifts

In preparing for the talk I was to give today, I found the following resources relating to the spiritual gifts that our Heavenly Father gives to His children. Originally, I thought I would research and show how Joseph Smith had many spiritual gifts.

When delivering my talk, it seemed more appropriate to share stories that were surrounded by less deep doctrine and more familiar ground.

LDS Church History - Speaking in Tongues

http://lds-church-history.blogspot.com/2012/10/speaking-in-tongues.html

Speaking in tongues was common in the early days of the church.

Often, when one spoke in tongues, fellow Mormons thought they were speaking in the Pure or Adamic language

http://lds-church-history.blogspot.com/2012/10/speaking-in-tongues.html

After some time, caution was urged. Interpretation was to accompany the gift, and that which was said was not to be taken as doctrine.

http://lds-church-history.blogspot.com/2012/10/speaking-in-tongues.html

There Are Many Gifts

https://www.lds.org/general-conference/1987/10/there-are-many-gifts?lang=eng

For us to conclude that we have no gifts when we judge ourselves by stature, intelligence, grade-point average, wealth, power, position, or external appearance is not only unfair but unreasonable.

Harold B. Lee Library - Gifts of the Spirit

http://eom.byu.edu/index.php/Gifts_of_the_Spirit

Clearly the Spirit can grant any gift that would fill a particular need; hence, no exhaustive list is possible, but many gifts have been promised the Church.

http://eom.byu.edu/index.php/Gifts_of_the_Spirit

Of one vision Joseph remarked, "I could explain a hundred fold more that I ever have of the glories of the kingdoms manifested to me in the vision were I permitted, and were the people prepared to receive them."

For example, in 1843 he said, "It is my meditation all the day, and more than my meat and drink, to know how I shall make the Saints of God comprehend the visions that roll like an overflowing surge before my mind."

Process of translating the Book of Mormon. Sentences would appear and were read by the Prophet...

Speaking in Tongues

http://www.mormonwiki.com/Speaking_in_Tongues

"Hearing the word of God" is the purpose for speaking in tongues

http://www.mormonwiki.com/Speaking_in_Tongues

Speak not in the gift of tongues without understanding it, or without interpretation. The devil can speak in tongues; the adversary will come with his work; he can tempt all classes; can speak in English or Dutch. Let no one speak in tongues unless he interpret, except by the consent of the one who is placed to preside; then he may discern or interpret, or another may.

http://www.mormonwiki.com/Speaking_in_Tongues

Paul's observation

And all these gifts come from God, for the benefit of the children of God (Doctrine and Covenants 46:16, 24-26). (See also, 1 Corinthians 12:10, 28, 30; 14.)

Joseph and Sidney View into The Heavens

http://chapmanresearch.org/PDF/Joseph%20and%20Sidney%20View%20into%20The%20Heavens.pdf

Philo Dibble Autobiography

Joseph wore black clothes, but at this time seemed to be dressed in an element of glorious white, and his face shone as if it were transparent, but I did not see the same glory attending Sidney [Rigdon]. Joseph appeared as strong as a lion, but Sidney seemed as weak as water, and Joseph, noticing his condition smiled and said, "Brother Sidney is not as used to it as I am."

Sidney is not Used to it as I am

How the revelation on the 3 degrees of glory was received.

On another occasion, when the Nauvoo Legion was on parade, the heavens began to blacken as if to rain. The people began to get uneasy, and some were preparing to leave. Joseph arose in his saddle and shouted, "Attention, Legion! Don't break the ranks-- it is not going to rain. If it rains enough to wet through your shirt sleeves, the Lord never spoke by my mouth!"

"Recollections of the Prophet Joseph Smith," The Juvenile Instructor 27 (1892)

http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/REC-JS.html

It had already begun to sprinkle rain, but it ceased, the clouds passed away and drill continued as long as it was desirable. There are probably many living now who will remember these latter circumstances.

http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/REC-JS.html

Zion's Camp

We continued our journey until we reached the Wakandaw River, having traveled twenty-five miles without resting or eating. We were compelled to ferry this stream; and we found on the opposite side of it a most desirable place to camp, which was a source of satisfaction to the now weary and hungry men. On reaching this place the Prophet announced to the camp that he felt impressed to travel on; and taking the lead, he invited the brethren to follow him.

This caused a split in the camp. Lyman Wight and others at first refused to follow the Prophet, but finally came up. The sequel showed that the Prophet was inspired to move on a distance of some seven miles. It was reported to us afterwards that about eight miles below where we crossed the river a body of men was organized to come upon us that night. ""

http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/REC-JS.html

In my early years I used to often eat at the table with Joseph the Prophet. At one time he was called to dinner. I being at play in the room with his son Joseph, he called us to him, and we stood one each side of him. After he had looked over the table he said, "Lord, we thank Thee for this Johnny cake, and ask Thee to send us something better. Amen." The corn bread was cut and I received a piece from his hand.

Before the bread was all eaten, a man came to the door and asked if the Prophet Joseph was at home. Joseph replied he was, whereupon the visitor said, "I have brought you some flour and a ham."

Joseph arose and took the gift, and blessed the man in the name of the Lord. Turning to his wife, Emma, he said, "I knew the Lord would answer my prayer."

http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/REC-JS.html

On another occasion he preached and chastised the rich, or those who had money, for buying land at government price and selling it in small lots to their poor brethren at a high price. He said the Lord was not pleased with their conduct. "You say I am a Prophet. Well, then, I will prophesy, and when you go home write it down and remember it. You think you have been badly treated by your enemies; but if you don't do better than you are now doing, I prophesy that the state of Missouri will not hold you. Your sufferings have hardly commenced."

I think about eighteen months after this we all left the state.

http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/REC-JS.html

He rested on his gun, and bent his head for a moment as if in prayer or deep reflection. Then, with a beautiful beaming countenance, full of smiles, he looked up and told me to go and tell Mother that her son would return in safety inside of a week. True to the word of the Prophet, he got home in six days after this occurrence. This was a great comfort to Mother for her son had been absent about six months.

http://www.boap.org/LDS/Early-Saints/REC-JS.html

Brother Joseph was sitting with his head bent low, as if in deep thought, and had not spoken for a few minutes, when one of the elders present began to chide him for being bowed in spirit, and said, "Brother Joseph, why don't you hold your head up and talk to us like a man?"

Brother Joseph presently answered the elder by calling his attention to a field of ripening grain, saying that many heads of grain in that field bent low with their weight of valuable store, while others there were which, containing no grain to be garnered, stood very straight.

Proof of the correctness of his words was given shortly after, as the elder to whom they were addressed soon after apostatized and went back east.

The Gift to Know the Diversity of Operations

It is to the gift of discernment that reference is here made. Appointed leaders must be able to divide true doctrine from false, to single out true prophets from the false, to discern between true spirits and false ones.

Lesson Three: The Gospel in Our Daily Lives

fhe

https://www.lds.org/manual/family-home-evening-resource-book/family-home-evening-lessons/lesson-three-the-gospel-in-our-daily-lives?lang=eng

Enjoyed a nice evening with my family. It's always a challenge to contour lessons for both my older and younger children at the same time. This FHE lesson was good in that I was able to ask each child for feedback in turn. And by including everyone, I was able to keep most of their attention. It also helped that we used strawberry pie as our object lesson (because we had already eaten dinner).

For your convenience, I have included a printout of the wordstrips referred to in the lesson.

I am holding on to the promise that if we are consistent with holding family home evening (FHE), that our families will be blessed, even when my children don't seem to be paying attention. And these days especially, families can use all the blessings we can get!

Living the gospel is a way of life. Just like the slices of strawberry pie on our table, the gospel principles hold the promise of good things, but only if we partake of them. And though imperfectly, my family and I will continue to strive to obtain the happiness that comes from living the gospel.

Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

The Holy Ghost

The Plan of Salvation helps us understand our purposes here on earth. We know of the war in the premortal existence. We know that we chose God's plan -- to come to earth to gain physical bodies, to test and develop our faith and to return to live again with our Heavenly Father. Part of God's plan required a veil of forgetfulness to be placed on our minds so that we had the opportunity to live by faith.

Satan and his followers do not want us to succeed. We are faced with a multitude of temptations and choices. Our ability to make wise decisions rests with our understanding of the Holy Ghost, who he is and how he can help us.

Gospel Topics: Holy Ghost

http://www.lds.org/topics/holy-ghost?lang=eng

Gospel Topics: Spiritual Gifts

http://www.lds.org/topics/spiritual-gifts?lang=eng

Spiritual gifts are blessings or abilities given by God to His children through the power of the Holy Ghost. Gifts of the Spirit are given to bless and benefit those who love the Lord and seek to keep His commandments. (See D&C 46:9.)

Spiritual Gifts

By Elder Dallin H. Oaks

Of the Quorum of the Twelve

http://www.lds.org/ensign/1986/09/spiritual-gifts?lang=eng

Spiritual gifts come to those who have received the gift of the Holy Ghost. As the Prophet Joseph Smith taught, the gifts of the Spirit “are obtained through that medium” [the Holy Ghost] and “cannot be enjoyed without the gift of the Holy Ghost. … The world in general can know nothing about them.”
